OOC: Disclaimer [Jun. 8th, 2020|08:37 pm]

Disclaimer: Johnny Rebel is very not politically correct. He came into being in the secessionist South during the Civil War -- as such, he is a secessionist, a white supremacist, and a racist. He will likely use some very not-nice words to describe people. These are the views of the character and NOT of me, his player. Repeat -- I DO NOT hold the same views as my character. Please do not be offended if he says something offensive to your character, as that is his personality. I guarantee you that it's not me saying it, so please don't take it personally. I love you all!

Three people (soon to be four) and three dogs in a two-bedroom apartment don't really suit a long-term living arrangement. Not for us, I mean. Not right now. I figure it'd be a lot better if everyone weren't stressed as hell about a million different things. Been taking the dogs on some real long walks lately, just to get out and have a moment to think on my own stuff. It might not be a whole lot to think on, when there's preachers burning holy books and that whole thing this weekend that the family gets all worked up over, but nobody expects the hick to have ideas on important shit like that anyway. But hey, maybe I'm just crazy for thinking my sort-of daughter having a baby and my father getting married deserve more of my attention than that. Who knows?

I think I want to get back to Memphis soon, before it gets too cold up here. Been spending entirely too much time on the wrong side of the Line lately and I don't like it one bit. And if I'm expected to set foot in the goddamned capital then I need all the fortification I can get.

Now this right here? This is quality fucking entertainment, it is. All y'all "mature, professional, well-educated adults" snipping and bitching at each other like a couple of prissy teenage girls, because my father made what y'all think was a poor choice in his show material. Yeah, we owned slaves. We owned a lot of slaves. You know who else did? My great-grandfather, George Washington -- sneaky bastard even rotated his staff at the presidential home so he wouldn't have to free none of them. I don't see none of y'all whining and crying over his slaveholding past.

What's done is done and you can't fucking change it. Deal with it. I have every ounce of faith in my father's ability to kowtow to the screeching masses and deliver the sort of groveling, self-humbling apology y'all will undoubtedly demand, so accept it and let's all move the fuck on. Being the unanimously despised racist scapegoat in this family's my job. And let's face it, I'm much better at it than my easily-cowed father, anyway.

[Dad]
Well. Apparently you're kind of an idiot.

One whole year already. I reckon this is the longest I've ever committed to anything since the war ended -- and I don't think the war even counts as a commitment. It wasn't so much a commitment as it was just something I needed to do.

When you compare it to everything else I've been unfortunate enough to experience, getting a tattoo kinda tickles. Wouldn't do it again, though. Staying still that long while someone runs whatever kinda needle-gun-thing on me ain't my idea of a real good time.

Well. I gotta say, for a get-together that coincidentally happened on a holiday I ain't never gonna recognize or celebrate in my life, that went pretty well. I held a baby and didn't drop it, I didn't get blindingly drunk, and I didn't shoot nobody (on accident or on purpose). We should do that more often.

I'm being made to sit down and watch some show on the History Channel about my war our war the war. I don't like it.

It's too detached. Clinical. They don't got the humanity of it. And they keep using the wrong goddamn flag in the reenactment bits -- okay, so it's all right if you're looking at just the Army of Northern Virginia's battles, that was our their battle flag from '61 to the end. But every unit had their own flags, that one ain't the only one. Can't just slap together an acting bit and hand them a flag at random.

And everyone in the reenactments is too clean.

Because I am a shameless trend-follower, I have come to request your drabble requests! One of yours and one of mine, two of mine, one of yours and one of someone else's and one of mine, I will accept anything so long as there are only 3 characters in total. Please give me something other than laundry to do tonight!

Contrary to popular belief, I didn't spend the first half of this month in a drunken stupor. Just ten days, that ain't so bad a couple days. And aside from that, I did find the time to get some work done. Ain't nobody can accuse me of being a layabout drunk all the time, at least.

Hd Qurs Army Northern Virginia
10th April 1865

General Order
No 9
After four years of arduous service marked by unsurpassed courage and fortitude, the Army of Northern Virginia has been compelled to yield to overwhelming numbers and resources.
[...]With an unceasing admiration of your constancy and devotion to your Country, and a grateful remembrance of your kind and generous consideration for myself, I bid you all an affectionate farewell.
R.E. Lee
Genl.

I still got nothing but good to say about that man. Goddamn hero, was the General. In the end he did as he thought was the only thing left to do, for the good of his men.

That don't make it hurt no less, though.

I need more whiskey.

Surrender of arms at Appomattox [image beneath cut] )

I ain't got the faintest clue who painted it or what it's called, but damned if that ain't the most accurate painting of what happened that day I ever seen.

Gotta stock up the liquor cabinet before April rolls around. I ain't got near enough to deal with this bullshit yet.

My shoulder aches something fierce. That's how it always starts. Think the minie ball mighta shifted around some, again. Ah, well. Take half a bottle of aspirin, half a bottle of Jack, and sleep it off. Never fails.

Petersburg, those long days where we knew we was lost but couldn't face it, and then Appomattox. Ain't enough whiskey in the world to drown that from my memory. Fucking hate this time of year.

Well, that fight was possibly not the wisest decision I've ever made. Some pro-censorship bastard clocked me in the gut right where I took that bayonet in '62, and I damn near saw stars. The busted knuckles and broke nose ain't no picnic either. It'll take an age and a half to heal, this time of year, but ain't no way I could've refused a fight like that.

Lesson learned? Never get into a fist fight when you're sober -- it's more fun drunk, and the hurts won't hit you until it's well past done.
